Clear floor space

The standards call for a clear floor or ground space of at least 30 by 48 inches positioned for either forward or parallel approach to the machine. That space cannot be obstructed by furniture, trash receptacles, or another machine.

This is the requirement most often missed, usually because a table or bin gets pushed in front of the machine months after installation.

Reach ranges for operable parts

Operable parts, which includes the payment device, the selection buttons, and the delivery bin, must fall within the accessible reach range. For an unobstructed forward or side approach, that generally means no higher than 48 inches and no lower than 15 inches above the floor.

Where the approach is obstructed, the maximum reach height is reduced. This is why placement against a recessed alcove or behind a counter needs closer attention.

Operation without tight grasping

Operable parts must be usable with one hand and without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist, and with no more than five pounds of force. Modern cashless card readers and push-button selection satisfy this comfortably.

Practical placement guidance

Do not place a machine so it narrows an accessible route below the required width, and do not place it where the door swing of an adjacent door overlaps the clear floor space. In corridors, keep protruding objects within the limits that apply to circulation paths.
